During various markets, I noticed Magpie Castle's colourful glass creations. Jinx' style clearly shows a retro influence while at the same time creating a modern take on a nostalgic art form. She brings a warmth and feeling of fun to her creations and they are well worth checking out!
Jinx asked me to choose some pieces that I'd like to stock and while I absolutely love and was very tempted by her dinosaurs (!), the mushrooms and hanging cacti were an easy choice. Make sure to pop in and see them in store!

What led you into creating?
I have always been a maker of things since I was little. My first love was painting which I ended up doing professionally for a decade, exhibiting in NZ and around the world until I changed gears in 2018 and found my love for glass. The way the light shines through and brings the colours to life led me from collecting colourful glass objects for my windowsill to making my own creations. I’m now in my 5th year of working with glass and haven’t looked back.
Describe your studio/creative space:
For the most part I work in my garage, since it gets a bit messy. Glass shards and molten metal droplets are everywhere. I am my own worst enemy when it comes to health & safety though and can be found cutting glass and soldering 200 degree metal in crop tops, shorts and jandals on hot summer days… I do wear gloves and a respirator though haha. My solder station window overlooks the backyard where I can watch the birds while I work. I have a few resident spiders living behind colourful glass panels that lean against that window. Oh and a mummified (well…dried to a crisp) mouse that I keep as a mascot on one of my cacti by that window too. It keeps me company :)
Your favourite piece:
I really like my little kaleidoscope necklaces, because each one is unique in the world and I get to name them like they’re my children.
A favourite place in NZ:
Golden Bay and the Catlins
A memorable meal:
Halloumi on everything!
